My old eyes are having trouble focusing on the front sight. I can't find a 4X scope that suits me to go on top of that little receiver as I can't find a good compact scope in the 8" range.

I've yet to run across a flaking blue on a 9422, in looking at 100-odd rifles over the past 35 years - so maybe yours was chemically damaged by some solution.
